Reconnecting to Natural Prairie Ecosystems

As people move from the countryside into cities and suburbs their relationship with nature and the environment tends to decrease. Several studies have linked values and lifestyle choices to environmental knowledge, which is why it is important that people living in cities, towns, and rural areas are exposed to natural settings representative of the biome in which they live. This is especially important in the prairie region of Saskatchewan that has one of the most transformed landscapes on the planet due to intensive agriculture. Alternative landscaping using native plant species in urban centers and rural communities would increase our familiarity with the nature of Saskatchewan. The use of native species in city landscapes such as parks would also provide opportunities for formal and non-formal education at all levels and supplement educational efforts in ecology, botany, and environment studies. Individual can also advance exposure to natural prairie ecosystems through knowledge of xeriscaping. Landscapes of native plant species within city, provincial, and regional parks would also provide people with a sense of place, one that reminds them about where they live.

Jim Settee: The Way Home

A Story of Transformation and homecoming

Directed by Saskatoon's own, Jeanne Corrigal

Tuesday May 11, 2010, 7:00pm at the Regina Public Library Film Theatre (Free Admission)

On a summer day in the late 1950s, Jim Settee arrived at Kingsmere Lake, Saskatchewan, called by a desperate team after a three day unsuccessful search for a lost boy. In two hours Jim tracked that boy over six miles of muskeg. Fifty years later, the filmmaker’s search for how Jim brought that boy back leads her into our universal search for home, and into her own personal homecoming. This is the story of Jim’s remarkable life as a tracker, historian, advocate, and spiritual mentor. It is also a story of transformation for those he touched, and a legacy for all people on our varied journeys ‘home’.

Opportunity to Submit Photos of RCE ESD activities, issues, and landscapes to UN University

Dear RCE SK Members,

Please see the invitation from the UN University below inviting us to submit high-quality photos for a publication showcasing RCE development globally. If possible, please cc Lyle or I on photos you choose to submit. The e-mail address you can submit them to is: RCEServiceCentre@ias.unu.edu

Dear RCE colleagues,

Our team is in the process of compiling material for a publication that aims
to showcase the development of the RCE initiative to donors, peer
institutions and stakeholders. This publication is for promotional rather
than research purposes, and would be a useful tool to publicise the
initiative. This publication is also timely, considering that five years
have passed since the start of the RCE network.

We now need high-quality photos from you to illustrate the diversity and
successes of RCEs globally, and would appreciate photo submissions of your
work and area.

Photos should be atleast 500 KB in size and there should be clear copyright
information. Photos should be sent with accompanying caption and information
on who should be credited.

Photos can show the richness of an RCE's landscape, RCE members in action,
or illustrate issues that are relevant to RCEs. We would like to avoid using
'posed' photos or photos from meetings and workshops in the publication,
unless such a photo is absolutely essential. The ideal photos would carry
relevant visual information.

Our team hopes that you can help us with this request at the earliest.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks in advance,

Sampreethi
