NPSS Annual Summer Field Tour to Cypress Hills

Join the Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan on Saturday, July 3rd in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park for a fun day of botanizing and socializing. This annual event is for people of all ages and abilities, and is always a favourite; last year's tour was our best attended ever and we're hoping to break the record again this year. We'll be visiting various parts of the park and doing short hikes (mostly on trails) through different habitats, such as riparian (wetlands, creeks and lakes), pine/spruce forests, fescue grassland and meadows. Along the way, we'll be trying to identify and record as many plant species as we can find which is where the "Botany Blitz in the Hills" comes into play.

You'll also learn about the unique geology and history of the area. Cypress Hills is a unique area in Saskatchewan and the highest point between the Rockies and the Labrador Peninsula.

The field tour is free to attend but everyone must register so that we can plan accordingly. To register, please call Chet Neufeld at (306) 668-3940 or e-mail him at info@npss.sk.ca.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dear Colleagues,

The DESD Secretariat at UNESCO is pleased to invite you to participate in the new collection of ESD Good Practices in Addressing Climate Change.

Background

Since 2007, UNESCO has published a number of collections in its Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Good Practices series:

·         Good practices in education for sustainable development: teacher education institutions (http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0015/001524/152452eo.pdf

·         Good practices in the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region (http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0015/001533/153319e.pdf)

·         Good Practices using the Earth Charter (http://www.earthcharterinaction.org/invent/images/uploads/Good%20Practices.pdf)

·         Good Practices in UNESCO Associated Schools (http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0018/001812/181270e.pdf)

Intended use

While the main aim of the collection is to provide for an exchange of experiences among stakeholders, its other envisaged uses include:

·         resource materials in the preparation of different ESD progress reports;

·         input to provide examples of practice for the DESD website;

·         input into related international events, including several UNESCO and UN events on education and climate

Practical issues

Scope

(1) Each stakeholder or organization can send a maximum of 3 good practices indicating the priority 1, 2 or 3 (only selected good practices will be included in the compilation to be published, while relevant ones will be posted on the website).

(2) Good practices should be about addressing climate change issues through ESD.

(3) The use of indigenous, traditional and local knowledge can be either a valuable component of a good practice submitted or be submitted as a separate good practice, e.g. how this is used to promote ESD in light of climate change.

Deadline

In order to enable the inclusion of the selected good practices in the document to be published, the deadline for submission of completed templates is 30 June 2010 at the latest. Templates should be sent electronically to the following e-mail address: esddecade@unesco.org with as subject: ESD Good Practices – Climate Change.

Language

The completed templates can be submitted in English or French. Please make sure that the text is properly edited prior to the submission.

Guidance and template

You are kindly requested to complete the templates in accordance with the provided guidance (see attached files). There will be no possibility to come back to you if the submitted template does not correspond to the requirements outlined in the guidance and we regret to let you know that for that reason your submission might not be included in the compilation. Furthermore, the selection of good practices to be published will take into account geographical balance.

Please do not hesitate to contact us through esddecade@unesco.org if you have any questions.

  • comme éléments de référence dans la préparation de différents rapports sur l'état d'avancement de l'EDD ;
  • comme informations pour fournir des exemples de pratique pour le site web de la DEDD ;
