The Canadian Coalition is pleased to announce a call for applications
for the 5th Summer Institute for researchers who are new to the field of
global health research. This year's Summer Institute is being hosted
locally by the Network Environments for Aboriginal Research BC -
University of Victoria, and will be held at the Quw'utsun' Cultural and
Conference Centre, located in the Cowichan Valley of Vancouver Island.

2) Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) - Call for Nominations
Deadline: 28 March 2008

The 2008 nomination process for election of CAHS Fellows is now open.
This nomination process recognizes the full breadth of academic health
sciences including all of the medical and allied health sciences, and
ranging from fundamental science to social science and population
health. Fellows elected to the Academy will be well recognized by their
peers nationally and internationally for their contributions to the
promotion of health science. They will have demonstrated leadership,
creativity, distinctive competencies and commitment to advance academic
health sciences.

Three letters of nomination are required, one of which should come from
a senior leader in the nominee's current institution (e.g. dean, CEO,
president, VP research). All nominations are valid for three years;
updates may be submitted for the second and third year of consideration.

3) CIHR: New Funding Opportunities in Infection and Immunity

a) Fellowship Award (Priority Announcement)
Deadline: 01 February 2008

HIV/AIDS Fellowships provide support for highly qualified candidates at
the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stages to add to their
experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad.
The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity HIV/AIDS Research
Initiative will fund applications that are determined to be relevant to
the research priority areas described below:
* Health systems, services and policy
* Resilience, vulnerability and determinants of health * Prevention
technologies and interventions * Drug development, toxicities and
resistance * Pathogenesis * Issues of co-infection

The maximum amount awarded for a single award is up to $60,000 per annum
for up to five years. CIHR anticipates that four awards will be offered
through this competition.

b) Training Grants
Deadline: LOI (01 April 2008); Application: 03 November 2008

The Institute of Immunity and Infection encourages applications for
training programs in all areas embraced by the Institute mandate.
Within the area of HIV/AIDS, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative will
fund applications that address at least two of the CIHR pillars of
health research and are determined to be relevant to one or more of the
following research priorities mentioned above.

The Institute also encourages training program applications from
Canadian researchers collaborating with German researchers at the
Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research.

5) The Kidney Foundation of Canada's 2008 - Research Competition
Deadline: 15 March 2008

Each year, the Kidney Foundation of Canada awards funds for Research
Grants, Fellowships and Scholarships to biomedical and allied health
professionals across Canada.

The application forms and guidelines for the Allied Health Doctoral
Fellowships and Scholarships are now available on the Foundation's
