CONNECTING EDUCATION AND ENVIRONMENT CONFERENCE - JUNE 10-11TH, 2016 (Saskatoon)

The conference 'Connecting Education and Environment: Mobilizing Sustainability in Education Policy, Practice, and Research' will be held June 10-11th, 2016 at the University of Saskatchewan. The conference will focus on land, place, environment, and sustainability and connections to education policy, practice, and research. Speakers and attendees will include educators, administrators, policy makers, students, sustainability staff, organizations, researchers, and others interested in the connections between education and the environment. 

June 10th will include a range of pre-conference options for policy-makers, researchers, and educators in K-12, Higher Education, and Indigenous Education - see descriptions below. 

On June 11th there will be keynotes and five strands of interactive sessions including many wonderful local, national, and international speakers.

Pre-Conference Workshops on June 10th:

Connecting Education and Environment through Indigenous Land-based Education

Manulani Meyer & Alex Wilson, 1:00 - 5:00 at Wanuskewin 

This afternoon pre-conference at Wanuskewin Heritage Park will engage participants in sharing and discussing experiences, teaching practices and research on Indigenous land-based education in a range of settings (e.g., K-12, post-secondary education, adult education, community education). Workshop will be outside weather permitting, so please dress appropriately and bring water and snacks. Please meet in Wanuskewin lobby at 12:45pm. Facilitators are Drs. Alex Wilson and Manulani Meyer. 

Celebrating Nearby Nature and Engaging Students in Community

Janet McVittie and Representatives from SaskOutdoors, 9:00 - 3:00 (bring your own lunch)

In this pre-conference, the value of nearby nature and methods for getting youth involved in sustainability projects will be addressed. Participants should dress in long pants, long sleeved shirts, with pants tucked into their socks. Please bring your lunch and water bottles, sunscreen and/or rain coats, as well as a notebook and pencils (coloured if you like to sketch with colour). The morning will be spent outdoors in nearby nature, a natural grassland, and the afternoon will feature a panel of teachers presenting on what their students have done in the way of sustainability projects. 

Sharing Post-Secondary Education for Sustainability Best Practices

9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (lunch included)

This half-day pre-conference will begin with an opportunity to reflect on the role and importance of education for sustainability in post-secondary education. This will be followed by a conversation café that will engage participants in sharing and discussion innovative programs, classroom approaches and initiatives that engage post-secondary students and educators with sustainability, whether in or out of the classroom. Lunch will be included. The session will be facilitated by staff members of the Office of Sustainability. Cost: $30.00 general: $15.00 students

Sustainability Tours of the University of Saskatchewan Campus

1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The Office of Sustainability will offer a choice of three sustainability tours of campus: (1) a walking tour, (2) a bike tour, and (3) a green building tour. The walking tour will focus on sustainability initiatives and features on the central campus. The bike tour will feature the central campus, as well as sustainability features and initiatives on the periphery of campus. The green buildings tour will visit selected green buildings on campus. Participants on the bike tour will need to supply their own helmet and if they are from out of town, will need to indicate that they will require a bike in advance of the tour. Tours will be given by staff members and summer students of the Office of Sustainability. Numbers will be limited 12 people per tour.
