Jim Settee: The Way Home

A Story of Transformation and homecoming

Directed by Saskatoon's own, Jeanne Corrigal (will be in attendance)

Tuesday May 11, 2010, 7:00pm at the Regina Public Library Film Theatre (Free Admission)

On a summer day in the late 1950s, Jim Settee arrived at Kingsmere Lake, Saskatchewan, called by a desperate team after a three day unsuccessful search for a lost boy. In two hours Jim tracked that boy over six miles of muskeg. Fifty years later, the filmmaker’s search for how Jim brought that boy back leads her into our universal search for home, and into her own personal homecoming. This is the story of Jim’s remarkable life as a tracker, historian, advocate, and spiritual mentor. It is also a story of transformation for those he touched, and a legacy for all people on our varied journeys ‘home’.

Training for Transition Workshop

This two day workshop is intended to introduce and allow for practice of skills required to initiate the very successful “Transition Town” model of local response to global challenges.  Learn how to: initiate a transition group in your community; build awareness of peak oil, climate change and economic instability; and engage citizens from all walks of life in neighborhood or community projects.  This is a very full two days of learning. From the practical (organizing Open Space sessions and planning awareness activities) to the theoretical (principles of resilience and theories of change), you will leave the session better equipped to offer transition leadership in the place you call home.

Course Objectives Include:
Understanding the context for transition;
Understanding the Transition Towns model as it has evolved so far – from inspiration to working groups;
Gaining knowledge of the main steps of transition;
Working out a plan of action for yourself and your community;
Understanding the inner and outer aspects of transition;
Having the elements of an inspiring talk on Transition Towns and
Enabling educators to share transition concepts and actions with their students.

Who Should Attend?

The workshop is for anyone interested in strengthening a community wide response to the converging trends of fossil fuel dependence, climate change and economic instability. Anyone is welcome to attend!  We are particularly hoping to have representatives from various local Environmental and Social Justice Organizations, as well as the Community Associations.

Behind the Scenes:

Rooted and Transition Saskatoon are pleased to present this workshop in conjunction with the Office of Sustainability, SEN and ESSA, as part of a series of events and activities beginning this spring.  Our goal is to find ways to support existing, and encourage new, activities that all contribute to the transition of the Saskatoon region to a powered down, sustainable future.  These activities will include; film screenings, public discussions on topics including regional food sovereignty, The "Great Reskilling Skill-Share Series", participation in the 350.org Global Work Party on October 10, and more!.  We welcome new members at all levels of involvement!
