Job Introduction

The International Centre for Sustainable Cities (ICSC), The Co-operators and the City of Regina have formed a partnership to promote youth involvement in creating sustainable cities. Engaging youth in visioning, planning and developing community projects is fundamental to assuring a sustainable future in our cities. The purpose of this project is to empower young people to become involved in thinking about and shaping the future of their city through green asset mapping. Using photo visioning and community mapping, youth from the City of Regina will imagine the ideal future for their community, create a youth vision for the City and develop a Youth Green Guide. Through physical mapping exercises, youth will identify the places, resources, and facilities within their community that offer green/sustainability services or spaces.

 

The Local Youth Coordinator position is a full-time contract for four months, during which time the successful candidate will work with young people in Regina in developing their vision and conducting a green asset mapping project of the community. 

 

The Local Youth Coordinator will connect with youth organizations and local schools to train other young people to facilitate visioning and community green asset mapping projects. As a result of the project, the City of Regina will have a Youth Vision statement around sustainability issues and a Youth Green Guide. 

 

Duties Include:

§         Build relationships with youth service providers, high schools and school district representatives

§         Train and engage youth at a local high school as peer-to-peer facilitators of green asset mapping and visioning.

§         Facilitates youth visioning exercises, community green asset mapping, photo visioning and other interactive processes in order to develop the Youth Green Guide. Green asset mapping is a process where young people identify the places, resources, and facilities within their community that offer green/sustainability services or spaces. These maps are then developed into printed or electronic youth guides.

§         Performs other duties, as assigned

 

The Local Youth Coordinator will connect with youth organizations and local schools to train other young people to facilitate visioning and community mapping projects. The Local Youth Coordinator will be responsible for assuring that this project is youth-led. The aim will be to engage youth as peer-to-peer facilitators of green asset mapping and visioning. Throughout the project, the Local Youth Coordinator and trained youth will gather input from youth for the development of a city Youth Green Guide. The Local Youth Coordinator will be trained and supported through the Youth-led Development Program at Sustainable Cities, as well as by staff at The Co-operators.

 

Required Education and Experience:

§         Completion of undergraduate or community college course with course content/experience related to sustainability, the environment, urban planning, social work, and/or education or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

§         Passionate about youth engagement and urban sustainability

§         Knowledge of sustainability and environmental issues

§         Experience in facilitation, community outreach, and/or multi-stakeholder collaboration. 

§         Experience working with high school aged youth

 

This project will have a project Steering Committee consisting of ICSC, the City of Regina, The Co-operators, and the UN Centre of Expertise on Sustainable Development Education. A staff member from The Co-operators will serve as a mentor for the Local Youth Coordinator.

 

This short-term contract position commences the week of September 14th, 2009.

Salary: $18/hour (full time for four months)
