Health Research Weekly News - Changes to SHRF funding

Subject: Reminder re: Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF) Program Changes for 2012

Below please find information regarding program changes for the SHRF competition(s) in 2012. Please take note of these changes and notify if you plan to submit an application to any of these programs.

Program changes approved for SHRF’s 2012 funding competitions

Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation’s Board recently approved changes to funding programs that will take effect in 2012. These changes are based on feedback from the research community.

Beginning with the 2012 competition (March 15th deadline), SHRF will offer a revised version of its establishment grant. The program, which will now simply be called the “SHRF Establishment Grant Program”, combines and replaces the New Investigator Establishment Grant and the Establishment Equipment Grant Programs. It will provide the following changes: (1) a three-year term (compared to the former two-year term); (2) a slightly increased amount of funding – $120,000 total, compared to the $110,000 previously available from the two combined programs; and (3) more year-to-year flexibility in spending the total grant amount. Major, essential equipment can still be requested as part of establishment grant budgets. Other than the changes outlined here, the revised program maintains the same purpose, scope, important dates, allowable expenses, and eligibility requirements as previous competitions.

Applicants to SHRF’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program who apply for a Tri-Agency Award (NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR) and who are successful in both the SHRF and the national competitions are expected to take the Tri-Agency Award. As an incentive for SHRF applicants to also apply for national funding, SHRF tops up the national award if the applicant remains in Saskatchewan. The amount of the two-year Top-up Incentive Award will be increased from $5,000/year to $10,000/year in salary for the award holder. The combined total will now be greater than SHRF’s fellowship award amount, rewarding the effort and excellence of these successful applicants.

SHRF’s Health Research Group Grant program (all three phases) will return in 2012 (October 1st deadline), after a one-year hiatus due to SHRF’s budget cut.

SHRF’s 2012 Awards Guide and 2012 Application forms will be released during Health Research Week (November 27 to December 3, 2011). Questions about SHRF’s funding programs should be directed to SHRF’s Funding Program Manager, Karen Glazebrook (; 306-975-1686).
