The new Evidence-Informed Healthcare Renewal (EIHR) initiative is an opportunity for researchers to advance the current state of knowledge and generate novel and creative solutions to strengthen Canada's healthcare system. The initiative focuses on three priority research areas: financing and funding models; health system sustainability; and governance and accountability. Innovation in these areas will require contributions from a wide range of disciplines and methodological, conceptual and theoretical approaches. A number of exciting funding opportunities are available with upcoming application deadlines.

i. Advancing Theoretical and Methodological Innovations

This funding opportunity supports research that is informed by a range of disciplinary perspectives and that advances theories, conceptual frameworks, scientific methods, and/or measurement approaches towards a strengthened Canadian health care system and improved health for Canadians.
Registration deadline: September 30, 2011
Application deadline: October 28, 2011

In 2010, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research (CBR) Program undertook an evaluation of its suite of funding mechanisms. This two stage consultation - web-based survey and key informant interviews - was overseen by the HIV/AIDS CBR Steering Committee in an effort to ensure the CBR Program was meeting the needs of the community. The final consultation report contains many important findings that will guide the decisions of the Steering Committee in the years ahead. This report is now available in both official languages.

If you would like to receive an electronic copy of this report in either official language, please send an email to HIVAIDS-VIHSIDA@cihr-irsc.gc.ca

The Executive Summary of this report can be found at: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/43703.html

2) Foundation Fighting Blindness - Operating Grant   Just under six weeks remain until the deadline for Letters of Intent to the 2011/2012 Foundation Fighting Blindness Operating Grant competition. Letters of Intent are a required first step for investigators wishing to make a full proposal.
Forms and instructions for completing this Letter of Intent process are available on our website at http://www.ffb.ca/research/grants_awards/og_app.html. Letters of Intent are due by November 15, 2011.

Please note, although there is no cross country competition for graduate or post-doctoral fellowship awards being offered by the Foundation Fighting Blindness this year, a competition for the Foundation Fighting Blindness - BMO Financial Group Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Retinal Research is currently underway for a single fellowship at the University of Toronto. Interested parties should visit the FFB website at http://www.ffb.ca/research/grants_awards/FFB_BMO_award.html for more details.

Each year, the Foundation Fighting Blindness distributes over $1.2 million in research funding. This funding is enabling the work of exemplary scientists, who are making dramatic progress in the fight against blindness.
